What is a Hangman's fracture? Fracture through the vertebral arch of the atlas between superior and inferior articular facets
Fracture of the odontoid process of the atlas
Fracture of the odontoid process of the axiss
Fracture through the vertebral arch of the axis between superior and inferior articular facets
Fracture through the body and extending in to the spinous process of the atlas.

This fracture typically occurs with hyperextension of the neck as seen following hanging (thus the name!) or high speed road traffic accident. Can result in paraplegia or death.
