Question #210

Which of the following is not a venous sinus?

There are two different types of sinuses found in the head:

  • The paranasal air sinuses:
    • Frontal
    • Maxillary
    • Ethmoidal
    • Sphenoidal
  • The dural sinuses:
    • Superior and inferior sagittal sinuses
    • Straight
    • Transverse
    • Sigmoid
    • Superior and inferior petrosal sinuses
    • Cavernous sinus

The superior sagittal sinus runs in the superior aspect of the falx cerebri, draining, usually into the right transverse sinus.

The inferior sagittal sinus runs in the inferior aspect of the falx cerebri, draining, posteriorly into the straight sinus which in turn drains usually into the left transverse sinus.

The two transverse sinuses pass laterally running in the edge of the tentorium cerebelli. As it reaches the petrous part of the temporal bone it becomes the sigmoid sinus.

The sigmoid sinus grooves the temporal bone before joining the superior jugular bulb near the jugular foramen and eventually draining into the internal jugular vein.
