Question #283

Which is the most vital of the laryngeal muscles?

Of all the intrinsic muscles of the larynx posterior cricoarytenoid is unique as it is the only muscle which abducts the vocal cords. If it is paralyzed the vocal cords adduct.

The other intrinsic laryngeal muscles can be divided based on their action on the vocal cords:

  • Adducts: Lateral cricoarytenoid, transverse and oblique arytenoids
  • Tenses: Cricothyroid
  • Relaxes: Thyroarytenoid, Vocalis
