Question #407

Flexor digitorum superficialis

Flexor digitorum lies in the middle layer of the flexor compartment of the forearm. It has two heads, the humeral head arising from the common flexor origin, and the radial head from the radial tuberosity. It passes through the carpal tunnel with the tendons lying two superficial (to the middle and ring fingers) and two deep (to the index and little fingers). The tendons divide at the level of the base of the proximal phalanx before inserting into the base of the middle phalanx.

It flexes the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints. It is also a weak elbow flexor

It is innervated by the median nerve, which after passing between the two heads of pronator teres descends between the two heads of flexor digitorum superficialis.
