Rectus femoris is the most superfical component of the quadriceps femoris muscle. It arises from the anterior inferior iliac spine with additional fibres attaching to the hip capsule. It continues anterior to the thigh and forms the superficial central component of the quadriceps tendon which inserts into the patella. It is the patella tendon which inserts into the tibial tuberosity.
Since it passes over two joints it both flexes the hip and extends the knee.
It is innervated by the femoral nerve (L2,3,4).
