Question #457

Which of the following features is asssociated with congenital tricuspid atresia?

Following maldevelopment of the tricuspid valve blood will not be able to flow between the right atrium and right ventricle. Pressure will increase in the right atrium and blood will therefore force the septum primum away from the septum secundum thus keeping the foramen ovale patent. Blood is shunting from right to left. Since this is deoxygenated blood the infant will suffer from a persistent cyanosis.

Due to the increased volume of blood flowing through the left side of the heart the left ventricle hypertrophies.
