The angle of Louis extends from the manubriosternal joint anteriorly to the T4/5 intervertebral disc. At this level several key structures are located:

• Beginning and end of the arch of the aorta
• Division of the pulmonary trunk to give right and left pulmonary arteries
• Bifurcation of the trachea
• The second costal cartilage
