There and many separate deep cervical lymph nodes that run along the length of the internal jugular vein, the most prominent are the jugulodigastric (superiorly) and the jugulo-omohyoid nodes (inferiorly).
The tongue and upper pharynx drain directly into the superior group of deep cervical lymph nodes while the lymph from the face and upper neck superficial tissue drain via the parotid, submandibular and occipital lymph nodes.
The thyroid, larynx and oesophagus all drain into the deep inferior group of cervical lymph nodes. The superficial tissue of the lower neck drain first into lymph nodes around the external jugular vein, and then subsequently into the deep cervical lymph nodes.
