Question #184
Which of the following is not a recognised abnormality of the position of thyroid tissue?
The thyroid gland descends from the foramen caecum at the posterior aspect of the tongue, passing anterior to the hyoid before looping backwards and finally descending to its final resting position. Residual thyroid tissue can be found at any place along this course. The tract that the thyroid gland takes is known as the thyroglossal duct and although this usually closes in foetal life, if it does not a cyst or even fistula can form.
