Question #224

Considering the thyroid gland which of the following statements is correct?

The thyroid gland drains into superior and middle thyroid veins which subsequently drain into the internal jugular vein, and the inferior thyroid vein which drains into the left brachiocephalic vein.

Arterial supply is usually via the superior thyroid artery, a branch of the external carotid artery, and the inferior thyroid artery, a branch of the thyrocervical trunk. In addition, occasionally a smaller artery the thyroidea ima may be present which arises either directly from the arch of the aorta or the brachiocephalic artery.

Lymph drainage is to the deep cervical lymph nodes which are located adjacent to the internal jugular vein.
