The 'central pattern generator' in a network of neurones involved in the initiation and control of respiration. It is anatomically located in the pons and medulla.
As regards inspiration, activity appears to arise in medullary centres. The apneustic centre prolongs inspirations, while the pneumotaxic centre inhibits inspirations. The circuitry is complex and incompletely understood.
