Question #387

Which of the following statements is incorrect. The vertebral artery:

The vertebral artery is a branch of the subclavian artery.

It ascends in the foramen transversarium of C6 to C1 (the atlas). From here it passes medial and posteriorly to ascend on through the foramen magnum on the antero-lateral surface of the medulla.

As it passes through the foramen magnum it pierces the dura to lie in the subarachnoid space.

It has several important branches including the anterior and posterior spinal arteries and the posterior inferior cerebellar artery before the two vertebral arteries come together to form the basilar artery.

The vertebral and internal carotid arteries are injected during cerebral angiography.
