The external carotid artery

The external carotid artery forms from the bifurcation of the common carotid artery at the level of C4. It has two terminal branches (the superficial temporal and maxillary) and six other branches.

It is palpable against the anterior edge of sternocleidomastoid just below the angle of the mandible.
