Question #446

Fibularis longus

Fibularis longus is located in the lateral compartment of the leg. It arises from the lateral aspect of the fibula, passes posterior to the lateral malleolus before taking an oblique course across the sole of the foot and subsequently inserting into the medial cuneiform. It therefore plantarflexes and everts the foot and is the antagonist of tibialis anterior.

During its long course the tendon grooves the cuboid bone.

It is supplied by the superficial branch of the common peroneal nerve.

It supports both the lateral longituidal and transverse arches of the foot. Tibialis posterior supports both the medial and lateral longitudinal arches while flexor hallucis longus supports the medial longitudinal arch.

Inversion and eversion occur at the subtalar joint
