Question #609

Ansa cervicalis

The ansa cervicalis is a loop of nerve fibres lying on the anterior surface of the carotid sheath. It is formed from fibres of C1 and sometimes C2 carried on the hypoglossal nerve and from C1-3. The hypoglossal nerve itself does not contribute to the ansa cervicalis.

The ansa cervicalis supplies omohyoid, sternohyoid and sternothyroid. C1 fibres carried on the hypoglossal nerve supply geniohyoid and thyrohyoid.
