The superior orbital fissure is formed by the sphenoid bone and is located between its greater and lesser wings.

The superior orbital fissure contains:

• Oculomotor nerve (carrying sympathetic fibres from the internal carotid artery plexus)
• Trochlear nerve
• Branches of the ophthalmic nerve (lacrimal, frontal and nasociliary)
• Abducent nerve
• Superior ophthalmic vein
• Inferior ophthalmic vein (may also pass through the inferior orbital fissure)
• Recurrent meningeal branch from the lacrimal artery
• Orbital branch of middle meningeal artery
