Question #681

Tensor tympani

Tensor tympani arises from the cartilaginous part of the pharyngotympanic tube and adjacent greater wing of the sphenoid. It inserts into the handle of the malleus.

Tensor tympani is innervated by a branch from the nerve to medial pterygoid, itself a branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. On contraction it pulls the handle of the malleus inwards and so tightens the tympanic membrane.
