Question #70

At which part of the uterus does implantation most commonly occur?

Fertilization of a human ovum most commonly occurs in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube. The fertilized ovum is then transported down the fallopian tube to the fundus of the uterus where implantation most commonly occurs.

Implantation within the fallopian tubes will result in an ectopic pregnancy.

Implantation lower in the uterus may result in placenta praevia, a condition where the placenta covers all or part of the cervix – a problem when it comes to delivery!
